Jump on the bandwagon with Tortoise Group. Match your special expertise with some of our needs. Join us in improving the lives of pet tortoises in the Las Vegas area. MegaDiet
- Affix labels on empty Zip-lock bags.
- Bag MegaDiet. Fill labeled bags from 20# sacks. Rate: about one bag/minute
- Sell MegaDiet from your home.
Membership
- Send pre-printed thank you letters and membership cards.
- Help expand the membership program. Enlist the enthusiasm of others who care for tortoises and their welfare to support the goals and ongoing successful efforts of our wonderful organization by joining Tortoise Group.
- Lead the Membership effort.
Pick-ups and Deliveries
- Deliver MegaDiet to Tortoise Group volunteers who sell from their homes, pick up newly printed newsletters and take them to the mailing house, and so on.
Educational Programs
- Assist Jerry Shupe with presentations about tortoises in schools and to youth and adult groups.
- Help create new ways to inform the public.
Programs & Field Trips
- Help choose topics and field trip locations
- Help secure guest speakers and provide for their needs at the programs.
Adoptions and Yard Visits
- Accompany Adoption Committee member to yards of prospective adopters to help them understand the preparation needed in their yards. Place the tortoise when the yard is ready. Visit others who request suggestions for a tortoise they already have or plan to adopt from another source. Visits require about an hour and are scheduled year round. Eventually make visits on your own.
Volunteer Coordinator
- Create a volunteer development and appreciation program for our fabulous volunteers.
Join the Board of Directors
- Brainstorm and carry out mission, goals, and objectives. help develop and implement new methods and projects. Seek expertise from within and outside Tortoise Group. Attend monthly board meetings and general meetings. Help general meetings run smoothly. The Board meets on the second Tuesday each month, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the home of a Board member in Summerlin. General meetings are on the third Saturday each month 1-4 p.m., March through September.
Outreach to Tortoise Group
- Call people about various activities and projects: potential volunteers, previous adopters, follow-up with those who had a problem, and so on. Board members and Committee Chairmen will work with you on each project.
Fundraising
- Seek major funding from grants and other sources.
Fairs and Events
- Help staff our booth of information displays at fairs. Besides participating, help plan, provide ideas for improving displays, and find additional venues.
Printed Information
- Work with others on the various aspects of creating and printing the newsletter, brochure, care booklet, information sheets, fliers, and posters.
Advertising
- Join our current push to expand advertising to tell people who have tortoises about our services. Work with the Board and advertising professionals. Review efforts to date and explore more possibilities.
Responding to Inquiries
- Return phone calls, emails, and letters to provide information about TG programs, services, and tortoise care, and connections to other sources of information. Spend time with Chairman, Betty Burge, to learn what is involved. Computer and email needed.
Care Booklet Distribution
- Help keep veterinary offices and public libraries supplied. Each person takes care of
5–10 locations close to home.
