Volunteers will conduct road mortality surveys during active season along the highway where tortoise fencing is not present to determine higher priority areas where tortoise fencing will need to be installed. Volunteers will be looking for live desert tortoises, tortoise sign (burrows, scat) and road mortality. Incidental observations of ravens and other species will also be collected.
During less active season, volunteer conduct fence and culvert inspections. Volunteers may also perform minor repairs such as filling in small wash outs. Fence inspections help keep desert tortoises off the road when they emerge in the spring.
Volunteers should be physically capable to walk 1-4 miles. It is important to be prepared to be outside- closed- toe shoes, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, water, etc. Tortoise Group will provide safety vests.
