Volunteers are needed to help clear out tortoise guards that are in place to help keep desert tortoises off the road way. Tortoise guards are connected to fence lines and act in similar purpose of a cattle guard. It creates a barrier that keeps desert tortoises from entering the right-of-way/road. These guards fill up with debris and dirt over time needing to be cleared out to function properly. Most tortoise guards take 15- 20 minutes to clear out with minimal manual labor. Tortoise guards filled with rocks or sediment that will require more than hand tools will be reported to NDOT's maintenance team.
Volunteers should be in good physical health and consult with their doctor to ensure they are capable of the necessary tasks. It is important to be prepared to be outside- closed- toe shoes, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, water, etc. Tortoise Group will provide safety vests.
Volunteers will meet at the Big Brothers Big Sisters office located at: 624 S. 10th St. Las Vegas, NV 89101 to carpool out to the site for surveys.
**Start time may vary depending on optimal desert tortoise activity temperatures for road mortality surveys.**
