Most tortoises emerge from brumation some time from mid March to late April. However, some tortoises will come out on a nice, warm day for a few hours but not emerge for good until some days or weeks later. Like 2012, it seems that we may have a warm week coming up starting today (in Las Vegas), March 2. Some tortoises may make several appearances, others won’t. We may have a cold spell to follow. So when your tortoise first appears, just watch and enjoy. It’s not time yet to feed or soak it or to expect lots of interaction. Wait until your tortoise is moving around and browsing before offering food or a soak. After all, the average temperature in Las Vegas has been only 48°F.
